Today, you will visit two imperial cities, Meknes and Fes. Wake up early to take pictures in the streets before fewer people are out and about, then leave for Fes and make a stop along the way at the UNESCO-protected Roman ruins of Volubilis. This ancient capital of the Kingdom of Mauritania was established in the third century BC and made an important hub by the Roman Empire, with many well-preserved buildings and intricate mosaics. Though incomplete, it is still fascinating to explore. Next, head to Meknes, your second imperial city. Be sure to visit the Bab El-Mansour gate, the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, and the Royal Stables. Afterwards, you'll embark on a day tour of the fascinating sights in Fes, and spend the night in the city at Riad or Hotel.
Fes, the oldest of the four imperial cities in Morocco, is a must-see destination. Start the half-day tour with your guide to explore this ancient city, beginning in the medina, which is the oldest medina in Morocco and has been around for over 1000 years. The city of Fes is divided into two parts: Fes el Bali and Fes el-Jadid. One of the longest and most important streets in Fes el Bali is Talaa Kebira, also known as "the Great Slope/Climb." Next, visit the Al-Attarine Madrasa, a beautiful madrasa (school) in Fes, Morocco, near the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque. It was built by the Marinid sultan Uthman II Abu Said (1310-1331). After leaving the old city, make your way to the new one and visit the El Mellah place. Enjoy the fantastic sunset view from the rooftop of the city before heading back to your Riad.
